FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
One of the legacies of the terrible period in American history in which Senator Joe McCarthy was conducting his witch hunts in order to destroy the lives of any citizen of the United States who he declared unpatriotic, according to his definition, was the addition of the unconstitutional phrase, under god in our Pledge of Allegiance.
I was in the fourth grade and remember vividly how disgusted I was to have to say the words under god, where before I took great pride in reciting the words of the Pledge of Allegiance, which to me represented a commitment to protect and preserve our liberties and our freedoms as Americans. Even at that early age I was aware of the hypocrisy which permeated the soul and spiritual essence of the town in which I grew up, but still had pride in America as a nation.
Huntsville, Texas, known worldwide as The City of Death, was with few exceptions a typical bigoted, segregated, inbred, backwater cultural wasteland where citizens of our State, were taken to be killed in Old Sparky, a medieval looking electric chair. It was a Bible thumping, church-filled town in which little boys were encouraged to kill birds, turtles, frogs, toads, lizards, snakes and virtually anything that moved.
Having religiously attended Sunday school, and having developed the concept that Jesus would never kill another human being or destroy Gods helpless creatures just for the pleasure of watching them die, I simply could not believe that America was under God, because if it were there would be no more senseless killing. And to be forced to say something that wasnt true as a pledge, was being forced to be a hypocrite, which to me was both un-American and anti-Christian.
From that day in 1954 forward I have felt very uncomfortable saying the Pledge of Allegiance to the Constitution of the United States of America because of the inserted lie.
Hopefully, our Supreme Court will uphold our Constitution and the very clear decree to separate Church from State, and then our Pledge will be cleansed of its legacy from the dark days of McCarthyism.
On the other hand, I would proudly and boldly, utter the phrase, UNDER GOD if our leaders would live and govern according to The Golden Rule of the New Millennium. (www.goldenruleministries.org) Then America would truly be ONE NATION UNDER GOD. As it stands now, we are behaving as if we were ONE NATION UNDER GREED. (www.moneyworship.org)
